Role of Contraceptives in Family Planning | World Population Day

World population is increasing at a very fast pace . It can be compared with a nuclear reaction. That is why it is also called population explosion. The main reason behind this explosion is illiteracy and lack of awareness about methods of contraception.
Contraception includes all measures temporary or permanent designed to prevent pregnancy. They comprise

  • Barrier method – Condom
  • Oral Contraceptive Pills
  • Injectable Contraceptives
  • Intrauterine Device (IUD) – Copper T
  • Tubectomy (Female)
  • Vasectomy (Male)

Doctors should offer “ CAFETERIA CHOICE’’ to their patients about methods of contraception, advantages & disadvantages & guide the patients to choose their options.
Oral contraceptive pills are quite effective to use for newly married couples & adolescent girls. Always remember, once you are pregnant, there is a life inside you. So, better prevent pregnancy rather than opt for abortion. These pills are also given to reduce Dysmenorrhea – painful periods or menstrual cramps during pregnancy, Menorrhagia – a menstrual period with excessively heavy flow, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) – an infection of the female reproductive tract, Fibroid – symptoms ranging from bleeding between periods to pain during sexual intercourse and low back pain, Endometriosis – a condition in which tissue that normally grows inside the uterus (endometrium) grows outside it as well as endometrial, ovarian and endorectal cancers.
Among injectable contraceptives, Depot-medroxy progesterone acetate (DMPA) – Injections containing hormone formulation given periodically to women to prevent pregnancy. It is formidable for lactating mothers. It is given three monthly and it does not interfere lactation. There is also weekly pill for lactating mothers.
Intrauterine Device (IUD) – Copper T is best to maintain gap among children. It is available for 3 years, 5 years and 10 years – to be introduced immediatly after menses. It can be removed easily in OPD when pregnancy is planned.
Finally, once your family is complete, opt for tubectomy or vasectomy. It is a very small procedure. It gives you freedom to live a happy & healthy life without tension of unwanted pregnancy.
There is also emergency contraception but that is for emergency only. Therefore, opt for right medication and contribute fully for the welfare of your family and the world.
